On part two of our Season 3 Lost Episode with Jimmy Smith, we take a look back at how Jimmy got his start in the industry. In his personal recollection, he goes all the way back to when advertising was his back-up plan, just in case his NBA career didn't pan out. We join him through the process of finding his first gig after school, as he talks about being confronted with racial prejudice in the hiring process, the challenge of getting a writing portfolio viewed through the proper lens, and the difficulty in finding an in with the big agencies. We follow early his path from his very first encounter with Lee Clow of then-small agency Chiat Day, up to landing his position at Weiden Kennedy, and having the opportunity to do some of his earliest and still incredibly memorable work.
